Lake sedimentary DNA to reveal long-term changes in aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning

چکیده
The emergence of molecular analyses based on the sequencing sedimentary DNA has opened up many new areas inquiry in paleolimnology. preserved sediments (SedDNA) offers possibility to consider taxa that were traditionally not accessible because they do leave distinct morphological fossils. Recent applications considered a diversity biological groups (including bacteria, protists, zooplankton, fish) illustrate how efficiently SedDNA-based methods complement both classical paleolimnology proxies and limnological data. knowledge gained from this approach is very diverse scope, ranging quantifying natural variability population community dynamics understanding these variables respond anthropogenic disturbances climatic change. use lake track long-term changes aquatic biota rapidly advancing field research. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning
Species diversity is a major determinant of ecosystem productivity, stability, invasibility, and nutrient dynamics. Hundreds of studies spanning terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems show that high-diversity mixtures are approximately twice as productive as monocultures of the same species and that this difference increases through time. These impacts of higher diversity have multiple cau...
متن کاملLong-Term and Large-Scale Perspectives on the Relationship between Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning
E have historically been interested in the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Widespread loss of diversity caused by anthropogenic forces has heightened this interest and fostered a desire to determine the mechanisms underlying these relationships. Species diversity is expected to affect ecosystem processes, because the number and kinds of species present determine the...
متن کاملBiodiversity and ecosystem functioning in dynamic landscapes.
The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) and its consequence for ecosystem services has predominantly been studied by controlled, short-term and small-scale experiments under standardized environmental conditions and constant community compositions. However, changes in biodiversity occur in real-world ecosystems with varying environments and a dynamic community comp...
متن کاملLong-Term Impacts of Forest Ditching on Non-Aquatic Biodiversity: Conservation Perspectives for a Novel Ecosystem
Artificial drainage (ditching) is widely used to increase timber yield in northern forests. When the drainage systems are maintained, their environmental impacts are likely to accumulate over time and along accompanying management, notably after logging when new forest develops on decayed peat. Our study provides the first comprehensive documentation of long-term ditching impacts on terrestrial...
متن کاملBiodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning: Experimental Systems
Experimental studies of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning have taken two main approaches: the experimental removal of species from real communities and the construction of model communities to form gradients of diversity. The fundamental difficulty in designing biodiversity experiments is the large number of possible species combinations that make simple, unambiguo...
